I  AM  A  CHILD  OF  GOD

by Naomi Ward Randall

I am a child of God,

And he has sent me here,

Has given me an earthly home

With parents kind and dear.

I am a child of God,

And so my needs are great;

Help me to understand his words

Before it grows too late.

I am a child of God.

Rich blessings are in store;

If I but learn to do his will,

I’ll live with him once more.

I am a child of God.

His promises are sure;

Celestial glory shall be mine

If I can but endure.

CHORUS

Lead me, guide me, walk beside me,

Help me find the way.

Teach me all that I must do

To live with him someday.

Bessie June Rounds Phillips-Whitney
1924 - 2016

Bess, (92), passed away in Fresno, California on October 14, 2016 where she and her husband, William E. Phillips, raised their three daughters. She was born on June 24, 1924 in Manhattan Beach, California, the daughter of William Elmer Rounds and Verna Arave Rounds. Her brother William Grant Rounds proceeded her in death. Bess leaves behind three daughters: Judith Ann Phillips Hanks in Gilbert, AZ; Christina Louise Phillips Myers in Richland, WA and Dena Carol Phillips Callahan in Fresno, CA along with fifteen grandchildren and 53 great-grandchildren.

Bess grew up in Southern California where she studied piano and dance lessons as a young girl. At an early age she played in a professional band and also played piano for both church and community activates including YMCA dances. She worked as a secretary at Hamilton Junior High School in Fresno for many years. As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints she used her musical skills in putting together a variety of road shows and melodrama plays. With her husband she served a mission at the Washington D.C. Temple Visitors Center and helped many refugees who escaped Laos and Cambodia and entered United States to begin a new life.

She loved entertaining friends and family at her home and enjoyed traveling throughout North and South America and other foreign lands. After the death of William Phillips in 1993 she married E. Mills Whitney in 1998 and lived in Newhall, California. For the past (47) years (1969 to 2016) Bess has been an active member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers where she received the Heritage Award. She has a total of twelve ancestral lines to Utah pioneers.
